when p first started to blow outside n.o. i ws in 9th grade, just two years earlier id moved down to south carolina from charlotte nc (home of p's future bball team) and gone off early 90s p.e./tribe to bad boy & no limit. in s.c. ppl didnt fuck around, my friend adam had ghetto d right when it dropped and every day after school we kept playin that first song where p breaks down exactly how to cook crack, at 14 it ws the realest thing id ever heard. adam had ghetto d, charge it 2 da game, and mp da last don w the moving cover (i still think no limit cds had the best packaging of any cds ever, that hard toylike plastic that never broke or cracked like normal clear cd plastic, every album w embossed gold or silver cardboard, the bright color notches on the spine in blue or yellow or red) and i had ghetto d (my fav) and unpredictable, later i got charge it 2 and the 95 texas/n.o. 'bouncin and swangin' mix, still coppable in every mall cd store south of va

after his parents broke up p's moms went out to richmond ca while he stayed in 3rd ward calliope w his brothers, kevin ws deep in the dope game and for a while p ws too but he eventually decided to stay out in cali w his moms, w $10k he opened an underground record store in oakland back in 91 called 'no limit records' and after seein how much money dudes made w tapes out the trunk and how gangsta shit ws poppin then he started pushin his own tapes.

mamas bad boy doesnt have alot to do w the late 90s no limit i grew up w, its is p's 2nd album off 'in a minute/no limit' records, produced mostly by e a ski and p himself. in 92 he ws in all respects a west coast rapper but more dealer than pimp, this ws pre-bounce/beats by the pound and its weird bcz p is on some bleak fuck a bitch/trust no fuckin body/my niggas dyin in front of me shit but it has a weird amount of charisma and finesse, theres so much character here compared even to later releases. obv alot of the eclectism came from d.u. but you kinda even get the sense p ws listening to de la or other weirdy 91 native tongues cats, alot of the songs are like gangsta quasimoto or something w beat changes and improvised shit, now its standard in cali underground since e-40 but this ws two, three years before he ws even out. sometimes i wonder how much p cdve kept his rep up if hed stayed out in the bay w respected vets like 40 and too short instead of going mtv big off n.o. and ending up in the koch graveyard


MASTER P - MAMA'S BAD BOY (1992)

$$ watch your ass starts w a hot verse from rich kid where he invents that lox food/car thing (popcorn drop, pecan jag, eggnog whip, you know)- '38th is the spot where im rippin the top in my 68 stang i got the bitches off, w the clean purple back and the real gold plates, and the case im sittin on, triple gold daytons, w a peanut butter top, my shit straight dropped, im northbound on my way to the day spot' (yeah i know peanut butter top is established already but its the first car color/food rhyme i can think off!!) and then halfway thru the beat changes up for p's verse into this sunny piano loop

$$ bloody murder, maybe my fav beat here even tho its not v technically accomplished or anything, just squelchy bass and flute but it has that screw tape/freestyle session feel like dudes cd rap on it for hours. p's drawl comes off on this too but the scarface/manolo skit at the end is kinda wack tho, even as a pain in da azz fan i can say that in 92 this ws played the fuck out

$$ i think mamas bad boy ws the 1st post-nwa use of the be thankful for what you got break (deaded now by luda and juicy j), lyrically its one of the most cohesive songs here w kinda explaining how he got in the dope game and shit like that but the played beat makes it kinda boring but i think as p blew up he got worse and worse at shit like this after silkk and mac took over introspective no limit

$$ eyes of a killer is basically a trial run for 'i got candy' off tru 2 da game (its funny how much p gets dissed for jackin pac when he ws rockin this cameo break four years before 'all about u') except a better than mo b dicks chorus bcz p slurs all over and does that 'caaaaandy...owwww!!' cameo yelp

$$ trust nobody ft ea ski - p and ski got beef now bcz ea says he got p his deal w priority and never got paid for beats or whatever but i dont think they were beefing for a while after this bcz there ws that ea & cmt joint in like 97. ski reps cmt hard on this w an awkward first verse soundin like a fat albert kid tryna do angry predator-era cube, p's simple storytellin verse is 10x nicer-

(yeah ok obv its eazy x dead homies but its still nice!! one of the great things abt p is how transparant and well handled his influences have always been, ghetto d ws the best pastiche of 90s gangsta ever made)

$$ also weird proto horrorcore psycho rhymes where p stops the beat thirty seconds in to sing offkey 'we are the world / we are the dealers / we are the ones who sell crack cocaine so lets start sellin / its true we make a better pimp thats why we dealin' then rips a bitch tit out, fucks a dead girl (!!!!!) and lets the psycho theme play out ('yo turn up that ol gangsta ass music') w/o even a beat, its fucked up

$$ ooh shit is a nasty sex jam, more weirdness- 'before we did it... popped in the marvin gaye tape' and the beat stops while p sings 'daaamn! nothing wrooong, wit me, fuckin yoooou' over lets get it on, then 'back to the story...', the chorus is a monotone 'ooh, shit, bitch, what you done did to my dick?!'


$$ check p's cassingle cover pimpin foot locker bitches in his 1928 throwback ride!! im going big time!!! he rocks his early hushed grimy style here, the beat is drivin me crazy bcz i know somebody else used it but i cant remember if it ws later so i can fit it into how i think p ws inventing crazy shit w this album, its hot anyway

$$ shoot em up is more fake eazy right down to that forbes magazine republican ambition- 'so i refuse to get paid like them other dummies, sellin hella tapes and aint makin no money / you see i gotta fuck em up, started my own company thats how a nigga fucking came up', he also disses rappers who put pussy on the cover and talk abt eatin a bitch, which of course he did like two years later on the ghettos tryin to kill me

$$ rich and dangerous got tru on it, credited here as 'the real untouchables' and obv going for some kinda nwa vibe, all the way back from before silk ws 'the shocker' or even had that extra k - decent sampley funk beat while p does more reality gangsta shit, you can see the brown carpet and ugly trees outside the window

$$ usually the best beat on old skool albums is happy 80s rnb synth shit getting jacked like on dope pussy & money and you know its something where you shd be givin props to like atlantic starr or raydio or whatever but since you dont know the o.g. song you dont know what to say abt it, anyway this also sounds like d.u. too who i probably shd give those props to
